SNP5.11 — The Questions of the Student Kappa

For those standing in the middle of the stream,

(said the venerable Kappa),

When a terrifying flood has arisen,

For those overcome by aging and death,

Tell me of an island, dear sir.

Declare an island for me,

So that there will be no more of this.

For those standing in the middle of the stream,

(said the Blessed One),

When a terrifying flood has arisen,

For those overcome by aging and death,

I will tell you of an island, Kappa.

Owning nothing, grasping at nothing:

This is the island with nothing beyond it.

I call it Nibbāna,

The ending of aging and death.

Those who are mindful, having understood this,

Fully quenched in this very life,

Do not fall under Māras sway,

Nor do they become Māras followers.

The Questions of the Student Kappa are tenth.
